Holmes Elementary is a public school located in Liberty City. There are roughly 500 students enrolled in Holmes elementary, with the majority being of African American ethnicity. In late March Do Good 4-1 visited Holmes Elementary for a two-part Computer science workshop. We understand racial equity is a real issue and are committed to every child given an opportunity at a STEM career or college track.
Fifth-grade students got to explore computer hardware hands-on.
Students had a few minutes to introduce themselves and get a back story about Do Good 4-1, and how they give back to the community. afterward broke out into groups of four with a junior technician.
During the session, they had an opportunity to break down the computer piece by piece. Students were intrigued by the different components of the computer like the motherboard, CPU, power supply, etc. Instructors educated the students on the parts and the functions it carries.
After the informative session student took a quiz on the board guided by Max Joseph. Correct answers were rewarded with sweet treats. Science teacher, Ms.Williams was fascinated by the activity.” this project has my students so engaged. I’m starting to see some of my shy students come out of there shell.
